Who is Discovery?
We are a group of Christ-followers trying to live on mission together for the glory of Christ and the good of our city. We gather on Sunday mornings to worship and study, and we scatter throughout the week into our homes, jobs, and city to discover more of Jesus, and be about His kingdom. We like sermons from the Bible that lead us to thought-provoking and challenging discussions about our faith. We want to discover more of Jesus and delight in Him all the more.
What to Expect
Discovery Community Church gathers to worship the resurrected Christ on Sundays as one family.
Visiting a church for the very first time can be a little daunting, especially if you don’t know what to expect. It doesn’t have to be that way, especially if it’s Discovery Community Church you visit. Below you will find out a little about our Sunday morning gatherings so when you show up you aren’t immediately looking for an exit!
Each Sunday, Discovery Community Church meets for services at 10:00 a.m. to worship God. Our gatherings consist of worship through music, teaching from the Bible and connecting relationally with each other.
There's free street parking all along 10th Avenue but that can fill up quickly. Immediately behind Discovery Community Church is a parking lot with lots of spaces and usually it is quite available, though the Campbell River Community Centre may have other activities on occasion. It's a short walk around to the front of the building. Other public parking is found across 10th Avenue in some public parking lots.
If this is your first time at Discovery Community Church, it might be helpful to show up five minutes early just to get acquainted. As you walk into the renovated movie theatre where we meet, you will notice a mix of people, hanging out and talking. Please help yourself to free hot drinks and stop by the information table where you will find out more about Discovery. As you enter the church you will receive a worship folder/bulletin with important information about Discovery and upcoming events. Once inside the Worship Auditorium which will be on your right as you enter our church, feel free to sit where you like although the seats toward the front are really more comfortable. (psst, don’t tell anyone else as a lot seem to congregate toward the back.)
Discovery Community Church is a relational church. The people at Discovery are pretty casual and you will find a variety of dress styles so come in what you are comfortable wearing. You will also find that the people at Discovery are very welcoming so be ready for quite a few smiles when visiting.
If you have kids (ages 1-13), we have an excellent program where kids can learn about God and build friendships with each other in a loving and safe environment. Ask one of our greeters at the door and they can point you and your child in the right direction so that you can make it to their classroom. Infants are welcome in the main service. There is a speaker upstairs in our nursery, so if your baby needs to go there, feel free to do so without missing any of the service.
Call to Worship
We begin our service with a call to worship. All of our lives are worship and Sunday morning service is a special time of worship together as God’s people.
Most of the time we have a small worship band that leads worship through song. We use a mix of current songs and older songs and hymns as we sing in response to God. Who he is and what he has done is his grace in our lives and it propels us to worship.
We pray to the God of the Bible. We believe that prayer is more than just catharsis. We believe that God desires for us to seek His heart and ask for what He is eager to give. Sometimes we pray for relevant needs in our city and our world.
Most services, we include a very important time of encouragement as we publically testify to the reality of God in our lives and how we have seen His presence among us. Individuals are given opportunity to speak but not coerced.
Children have a special place in our service as they are as much a part of our church family as those of us that have been around for awhile. Jesus said, Matthew 19:14 "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
We value the teaching and presentation of God’s Word. The time when we study the Bible is an important portion when one of the pastors of the church preach a sermon. Typically, Discovery will work through a specific book of the Bible over several months. The teaching segment will often be about 45-50 minutes in length to encourage in-depth teaching of God’s precious Word.
The Lord’s Supper
The table is celebrated monthly and is open to anyone with a resolve that faith in Jesus Christ is our only hope for humans. The ordinance of the Lord’s Supper is a commemoration and supplication for the grace provided for in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All followers of Jesus are invited to participate in this regardless of what church you belong to. We often use a “self-serve” format with tables set up in the front of the auditorium. Please prepare your heart during the communion time then one may go to one of the communion stations, pick up a piece of bread and a small cup of juice and partake. This is also an excellent time to demonstrate new found faith. The whole service lasts about an hour and forty minutes.
There is a time in our service when an offering bag is passed down the rows for the convenience of the worshippers. Giving is one way where we worship God out of our earnings. It is not a payment nor a gimmick, but a joy and responsibility for those who consider Discovery Community Church their church. The money given goes to sustain and spread the mission of Discovery Church in Campbell River and beyond.
On your way out, please stop by the welcome sign our “Guest Book” and complete a “Connection Card” which may be given to a pastor or greeter. Lastly, on the first Sunday of the month, please join us as our guest for our Fellowship lunch after the service. And chances are, some of the other worshippers or guests will say “hi” to you throughout the morning.
I hope to see you on Sunday – if you are able to hang around after the service, be sure to track down one of the pastors (or another of the leaders who’ll you see up front) and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting you!
We want everything we do to exalt and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the gospel (Jesus death, burial, and resurrection) is of primary importance.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
If you are comfortable, feel free to participate in everything, but if you’d rather just sit back and check things out for the first time, that is okay too. If you have any questions, just ask somebody. If the other person is a Discovery regular they’ll probably be able to help you, but if they are new like you that’s great too, as you’ve just made a new friend!
